Myanmar is a country between Thailand, India, China and Laos, but you may know it better by its original name Burma or Upper Burma (Burma). This territory, extremely rich in history and especially in precious stones, was productive in the Middle Ages. After all, even our Czech crown jewels are decorated with precious stones originating in present-day Myanmar. Today, there are a large number of active sites that produce incredibly high quality gemstones. For example, first-class rubies (ranked by gemstone experts as among the absolute world’s top, which unfortunately reflects in their price); also a number of colourful spinels, cornflower blue sapphires, a number of collectible gemstones (hibonite, painite, serendibite, jeremejevite, etc.). The town of Mogok and its immediate surroundings are best known for gemstone production. Mogok is located in the Pyin-Oo-Lwin district of Shan State. The Phakant-gyi area, near Lonkin, in Kachin State in northern Myanmar, is important for jade production.
